Button Making Questions Answered, Ask ABM - What Is An Ejector Rod and How Is It Used?

Button Making Questions Answered, Ask ABM

What is an ejector rod, how does it work and do I really need one?  These are super popular questions for new button makers and ABM is here with the answers!

Ejector Rod

First things first, what is an ejector rod?  It's a super cool, amazingly handy little aluminum cylinder that fits over the bar in your graphic punch cutter to help you lift the cut graphic out of the punch.  If you order any of the smaller sizes of 1" - 1.75" from ABM, they come already equipped with this modern marvel and are available as an accessory for the 2.25" Graphic Punch and Photo Punch.  They are size specific so be sure you get the one that matches your punch cutter model.  Another quick tidbit, the 2.25" paper punch and the 2.25" photo punch use different ejector rods so be sure what you have and which one you are ordering to ensure compatibility.

Next, just how does it work?  It couldn't be simpler to use one of these babies!  Simply line up the slot in the bottom with the bar in the center of the punch, slide it on and let it rest on the bar.  After you pull the handle and the graphic is cut, simply push on the rod from underneath the punch to pop the graphic out.  How easy is that?

Finally, the big question, do you need it?  Fact is, you can absolutely cut a perfect circle without one but you probably won't want to.  Especially in smaller sizes, fishing that freshly cut circle out from the recessed opening in the top of your punch can be frustrating and can lead to creases or bent edges in your graphics when you try to get it out from the top.  Even if you use your finger to push them out from underneath, it takes extra time and if you are making multiple buttons orEjector Rod in Punch working on a deadline, time is money.  If you are making smaller buttons in particular, the ejector rod can be absolutely invaluable.  The opening in the bottom side of the punch is not a large space and has a metal bar running across the middle of it that you have to get your finger around to pop your graphic out.  Bottom line is they just help to make the already fun button making experience even more fun and speed up the process so you can make more buttons, which means more money for you!
